Do You Really Need Conditioner After Shampoo?

Conditioner is the step most often skipped in Indian haircare routines. Some worry it will make hair oily, others think oiling is enough. But shampoo and conditioner are designed as a pair, and skipping one half changes how the other works.

What Shampoo Does

Shampoo lifts oil, sweat and dirt from the scalp. In doing so it also removes some natural oils from the lengths and can leave the cuticle — the outer layer of each strand — slightly raised and rough.

What Conditioner Does

Smooths the cuticle so hair feels softer

Reduces tangles, so combing causes less breakage

Helps hair look shinier and less frizzy

Makes styling easier

Who Needs It Most

Long hair, where the ends are years old

Colour-treated or heat-styled hair

Curly or wavy hair, prone to dryness

Anyone in hard-water areas

Shampoo is for your scalp. Conditioner is for your hair.

How to Use Conditioner Correctly

Squeeze excess water from hair after shampooing.

Apply from mid-lengths to ends, never to the scalp.

Comb through with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb.

Leave for two to three minutes.

Rinse with cool water.

Does Oiling Replace Conditioner?

Not quite. Oil nourishes before the wash; conditioner smooths after it. They complement each other. Read more in does oiling your hair really make a difference?

Is it bad to skip conditioner? Skipping it can leave hair more tangled, frizzy and prone to breakage, especially for long or dry hair.

Should conditioner go on the scalp? No. Apply conditioner from mid-lengths to ends to avoid weighing hair down.

Can I use conditioner every time I shampoo? Yes — conditioner is designed to be used after every shampoo.
